In this article, we will be more focusing on understanding questions based on Age problem and tricks to solve a question in less time. In this type of questions, we need to evaluate an equation and using that equation we end up with the answer.

Let’s get into the basic concepts of this type of problems

  • Try to find correct relation in order to create the right equation for finding the answer
  • An equation must be one variable equation i.e 2x=23, 23y+34=y

Age Problems Tips:

  • If A is 6 years older than B or A is 6 years younger than B, in such situations, we have to add or subtract in the x variable
  • If A’s age twice of B’s age or A’s age is half of B’s Age. In such situations, we have to multiply or divide in x variable
  • If two ages are given in ratio, 2:1 we assume it as 2x or 1x
  • When A’s age is twice more than B. In such case, A= B + 2B

Types of Questions With Age Problem Tricks

  • When you need  to identify the relation between ages

    • Always try to equal the present age and future age by adding or subtracting years given in the question

Q. A man is 24 years older than his son. In two years, his age will be twice the age of his son. The present age of his son is:

Present:

Suppose Son’s Age be = x

His Father Age = x + 24

Future:

After 2 years his age becomes two times his son’s age

Son’s Age = x + 2

Father’s Age = 2* Son’s Age After two years = 2(x+2)

We can balance his father’s present age with the future by simply adding 2 years in it

Present Age + 2 = Future Age

x+24+2 = 2(x+2)

x+26 = 2x +4

26-4 = 2x – x

22 = x

So, his son’s present age is 22.

  • When Age in ratio

    • In this most of time numerator and denominator types of things come into play

Q. Present ages of Sameer and Anand are in the ratio of 5 : 4 respectively. Three years hence, the ratio of their ages will become 11 : 9 respectively. What is Anand’s present age in years?

Present Ages:

Sameer’s Age = 5x

Anand’s Age = 4x

which gives 5x/4x

Future Age:

Sameer’s Age = 11x

Anand’s Age = 9x

which gives 11x/9x

To Balance these, we have to add 3 years in the present age

Present Age + 3 = Future Age

(5x +3)/(4x + 3) =11x/9x

(5x +3)/(4x + 3) =11/9

9(5x +3)= 11(4x + 3)

45x+27 = 44x +33

45x -44x = 33- 27

x =6

Present Age of Anand = 4*6 = 24
